You can tell about Czechs whatever you want, but one thing will be certainly right and no Czech will protest about it. Czechs drink most beer in the world. And this is true for already a long time.
Different years bring different results but every year Czechs sit solidly on the top of beer consumption per capita. In 2019, basically in pre-Covid times, one Czech drank in average 468 glasses of beer. The average American in the same year managed to drink “only” 282″ glasses. And Germany, strong beer drinking nation, was still quite behind the Czech Republic with their 411 glasses.
What is the reason behind it? It is definitely combination of several important factors.
Czechs have historic tradition of beer drinking. It simply belong to us and beer drinking is as natural to us as drinking a water. Beer is brutally cheap. Yes. We know it is cheap for foreign visitors but it is cheap for us too. Almost everyone can afford to have some beer regularly without going bankrupt. Czech beer is not too strong. The amount of alcohol of the Czech beer is typically between 4-4,5%. So you can drink it easily without getting drunk so easily. Beer drinking is socially acceptable. If you drink vodka, you will be an outcast. If you drink beer, nobody will raise an eyebrow.
And maybe the last thing why Czechs drink most beer. We have great pubs and we have plenty of them. So getting one beer is easier than you think.
